Anthony Diala, a Next Gen alumnus and workshop facilitator, reflects on some of the conceptual and methodological challenges that confront many a graduate student in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as how to manage the “social” aspects of completing a PhD in Africa.

Anthony C. Diala is a legal anthropologist, an advocate, and an associate professor in the Department of Private Law at University of the Western Cape, South Africa, and the founding director of the Centre for Legal Integration in Africa. Diala is a former Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa fellow, and has facilitated numerous Next Gen workshops over the years.
