In recent years, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have taken steps to constrain the ability of users to share or amplify racist discourse on their platforms. However, Bharath Ganesh argues, by limiting the focus of their efforts to only the most egregious forms of racist discourse, the platforms may embolden broader networks of extremists to levy less obvious, but equally pernicious forms of racist discourse.

Bharath Ganesh is a scholar focusing on new media, political communication, and racism. His recent work explores far right exploitation of social media platforms in North America and Western Europe, the role of racism and Islamophobia in far-right communication, and international and corporate responses to hate and intolerance online. Before joining the University of Groningen, Ganesh was a postdoctoral researcher at the Oxford Internet Institute and senior researcher at Tell MAMA, a British charity dedicated to mapping and monitoring anti-Muslim hate crime. Ganesh completed his PhD in geography at University College London in 2017.
