Carol Padden

Carol Padden is dean of the Division of Social Sciences and holds the Sanford I. Berman Endowed Chair of Language and Human Communication in the Department of Communication at the University of California, San Diego. She has published in areas relating to gesture and emergence of new sign languages, comparative sign language structure, and multi-modality in language communities. Her research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Spencer Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education. Among the awards she has received are a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1992 and a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 2010. Her books, co-authored with Tom Humphries, explore the cultural history of sign languages and deaf communities in the United States and have been translated into German, Japanese, and Korean.
