Laura-Zöe Humphreys

Laura-Zoë Humphreys received an International Dissertation Research Fellowship in 2007. She is assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Manitoba. Combining film analysis with over two years of ethnographic fieldwork, her current book project examines how Cuban filmmakers both capitalize on and attempt to interrupt politically polarized readings of their work in a context where criticism of the state has acquired a new market value. She has also written about digital media piracy in Cuba under Raúl Castro. She held a Mellon postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University and graduated with a joint PhD in anthropology and cinema and media studies from the University of Chicago.
