Ryan Alaniz is a 2009 International Dissertation Research Fellowship recipient and a graduate student at the University of Minnesota. In this Research Snapshot, he examines the international community’s efforts at post-disaster reconstruction in Honduras and Haiti, comparing the two nations and their respective challenges. The Research Snapshots series is an initiative aimed at highlighting important and innovative research by SSRC fellows who are currently conducting or who have recently returned from doing international research.
Ryan Alaniz
As a 2009–2010 SSRC-IDRF and Fulbright fellow studying long-term post-disaster development in Honduras, Ryan Alaniz knew he could be of service when the January 12th earthquake hit in Haiti. He is currently consulting on a 5,000-home new community in Jacmel, Haiti, and writing his dissertation on post-disaster community development. Ryan has a continuing interest in working with reconstruction efforts in Haiti or other post-disaster locales.
