Welcome to Items & Issues, the relaunched monthly newsletter from the Social Science Research Council. Since 1947, Items has served as a platform for sharing the SSRC’s work and fostering broader conversations about the social sciences. This newsletter continues that tradition, offering a curated selection of social science readings drawn from Council platforms and the wider field.
This Pride month, our newsletter takes a closer look at gender and sexuality, rich fields of study that offer vital insights into broader social life. From 1996 to 2006, the SSRC’s Sexuality Research Fellowship Program (SRFP), with support from the Ford Foundation, catalyzed a new generation of sexuality scholars in a wide range of academic disciplines, including anthropology, communications, history, and sociology. Since the close of the program, global societies have witnessed a number of significant shifts—expansions of queer and trans awareness and activism; legalization of same-sex marriage in many countries; resurgent movements to restrict access to reproductive and trans healthcare and enforce gender norms.
This month’s readings highlight a range of research focused on gender and sexuality, including articles that illuminate overlaps with social justice, game and technology studies, religion and spiritual life, and more.
