Welcome to Items & Issues, the relaunched monthly newsletter from the Social Science Research Council. Since 1947, Items has served as a platform for sharing the SSRC’s work and fostering broader conversations about the social sciences. This newsletter continues that tradition, offering a curated selection of social science readings drawn from Council platforms and the wider field.
This month’s theme is Religion—an important aspect of national and international politics, a pervasive sociocultural force, and a critical area of study for social science. We’re excited to mark the occasion with a newly redesigned version of The Immanent Frame, the SSRC’s hub for interdisciplinary debate on religion, secularism, and the public sphere. Since its launch in 2007, TIF has published book forums, thematic forums, and special projects that cut across disciplines and borders. The refreshed TIF site makes decades of bold cross-disciplinary work easier to find and follow, and we invite you to explore it.
Below we highlight social science research that illuminates how religion intersects with nationalism, race, international policy, the public sphere, and more.
