As we observe the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we are revisiting essays from Items that examine the attacks and their aftermath through the lens of social science.
The first series, “After September 11,” asked social science scholars to bring their theoretical and empirical knowledge to bear on the tragedy in the immediate weeks after the attacks. These were intended as resources for teachers, journalists, and all who sought a deeper understanding of the attacks. A decade later, contributors to the original forum were asked to reflect on what they wrote and to explore what had changed and what remained the same since the immediate aftermath. Their contributions are collected in “10 Years After September 11,” offering social analysis of developments since 9/11, including the US invasion of Iraq and the War on Terror.
Together, these collections and other post-9/11 social science analyses illuminate a host of questions about social organization, grief, religion, militarism, and our changing social conditions in the wake of war and crisis.
